The Charleston High School football team picked up their first win in two seasons last week against Rantoul, who was the last team they beat before this season’s start. Friday night they traveled to Mt. Vernon and got off to another quick start.
A 24 yard passing touchdown gave Charleston the early 7-0 lead in the first quarter and the scoring didn’t stop their in the first half for the Trojans. Two more short runs in the first half put Charleston up 20-0 over Mt. Vernon at halftime.
Neither team did anything on offense in the third quarter and Charleston’s 2-0 record looked promising heading into the final quarter.
Mt. Vernon finally found the endzone in the fourth quarter a couple times but it wasn’t enough to take down Charleston.
The Trojans added 21 points in the final quarter and went on to win 41-20 to improve to 2-0 early in the 2016 season under first year head coach Tyler Hanner.
Charleston will head back to Trojan Hill next week to take on another South Seven Conference opponent, Centralia High School. Mt. Vernon will hit the road next week to take on Triad.
