SEAL Killed In Yemen From Illinois
(Chicago, IL) — The Pentagon says the Navy SEAL who was killed in a raid on terrorists in Yemen Sunday was from Illinois. Thirty-six-year-old William Owens of Peoria was killed in firefight with militants from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s cell in Yemen. The Pentagon says the raid left nearly 30 others dead, an estimated 14 of them terrorists. An al-Qaeda official says the dead included women and children, including the eight-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical Yemeni-American cleric killed in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen in 2011. Planning for the raid began before President Obama left office, but President Trump reportedly authorized the raid, making Owens the first U.S. service member killed during Trump’s administration.
