Olympian Phelps Addresses Congress About Athlete Drug Testing
(Washington, DC) — Olympian Michael Phelps is taking his message of more consistent drug testing to Capitol Hill today. Speaking before a congressional anti-doping committee, Phelps says he’s frustrated when he sees athletes he knows are cheating “break through performance barriers in unrealistic time frames.” Phelps says the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s demanding drug testing takes a toll on athletes, but he says it’s worth it to keep the sport fair and clean. Phelps says he hopes his Olympic medal mark of 28 gold is broken someday, but with a “fair opportunity to compete.” The committe is looking at ways to improve the international anti-doping system.
