From WTHI, medical coverage for over 22,000 retired coal miners and widows is about to expire at the end of this month. Lawmakers from these coal states are looking to possibly extend that deadline past the four-month extension put in place last December. At the time, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin and other Democrats were threatening to shut down the government if the issue was not resolved. Manchin now says that extensions won’t work anymore. GOP House leaders have pushed a plan that extends benefits through the end of 2018, about 20 months. Senate Democrats, including Manchin, have come out against the plan, saying it is only a partial fix.
