According to WCIA online, one lawmaker is trying to change the law of child support for father’s that are incarcerated. Many father’s that are in jail are still having to pay with interest their child support bills, and when they have served their time, no money is left for them to live off of. Lawyer Jeffery Leving wants to change that and say that men who are in jail should have child support put on hold while serving their time and freeze the interest rates. Representative Lashawn Fords bill that will be presented is hoped to pass and end the cycle for parents that keep getting incarcerated for not paying the bills. Depending on how long of incarceration the amounts are doubled or tripled and the interest rates paid go into the state, not the child/ren. Some are for this bill, like the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, but some parents who rely on this bill not passing because they need the money owed to them.
