The Illinois senate approved a few bills that would allow a budget for the state to go into effect.
The legislation was passed by the Illinois House earlier in the week. The revenue would raise the state’s income tax. The budget bill includes a plan to borrow $8 billion that would go towards paying the state’s $15 billion bills. Another bill will set the state budget to roughly $36 billion.
The Senate voted a 40-14 to pass on the plan, 36-18 on a tax increase up to 4.95%, and 36-17 to pass the budget implementation. All of the bills are now sent to Governor Rauner for consideration. Governor Rauner has said he will veto those bills if they reach his office.
