(Chicago, IL) — Now that the Illinois General Assembly has voted to override Governor Rauner’s veto and put a budget in place, things will slowly return to normal, but Illinois is not out of the financial thicket. With revenue from an income tax hike, money will start flowing to schools and universities, to social service agencies and to federally funded road projects that require a local match. But the pile of unpaid bills stands at 15-billion-dollars, and pension liabilities may still push the state’s credit rating downward. As for Governor Rauner’s reform agenda, House Speaker Michael Madigan says Democrats plan to work with Republicans to address Rauner’s concerns. Rauner said after the budget that he’ll continue to push for those changes.
