The resignation comes with the expected appointment of Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci as White House communications director. Spicer has been doing double duty as press secretary and communications chief after the resignation of communications director Mike Dubke in May. Spicer had a rocky tenure as chief White House spokesman. His combative news briefings were mocked by actress Melissa McCarthy in regular appearances on “Saturday Night Live.”
The 45-year old Spicer was the top spokesman for the Republican National Committee and worked closely with the Trump presidential campaign last year. He is close to White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who is the former chairman of the RNC. Spicer is a graduate of the Naval War College and is a public affairs officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
