The cost of pre-cut Christmas trees is going up this year amid shortages from the top U.S. producers, Oregon and North Carolina. Some of the problems can be traced back to the 2008 recession. The economic downturn drove many farmers out of the business, leaving fewer behind to pick up the slack for market demand. There’s also increased demand from overseas and here in the U.S. from state like California. Wholesalers are estimating prices could go up by 10 percent this season.
