According to a press release from MPD, Mattoon police arrested, age 31 of Mattoon, on Thursday Nov. 16th at 8:48 a.m. The arrest occurred at the MPD. An associate, Mathew S. Cook, age 33 of Mattoon, was also arrested at the MPD at 9:57 a.m.
Thompson was charged with Burglary, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, and Fleeing and Eluding Police. Cook was charged with Obstructing Justice, and Resisting a Peace Officer.
The incident began at approx. 3:18 a.m. when Mattoon police were dispatched to Ideal Auto Sales in the 1900 block of Lakeland Blvd. in regards to a business alarm. The charges against Thompson allege that he burglarized Ideal Auto Sales and stole a car while there. The car was located in the vicinity of Hindsboro and pursued by a Coles County Sheriff’s Deputy. Thompson allegedly abandon the car and fled on foot.
The charges against Cook allege that he was a passenger in the stolen car, that he also fled on foot from the Deputy, and that he lied to and obstructed police during the course of the investigation.
Both Thompson and Cook were located in rural Coles County by CCSO Deputies and were transported to the MPD where they were interviewed and arrested. Both men were taken to the jail.
