Giants Bench Eli, Name Geno Smith Starting QB
(East Rutherford, NJ) — The New York Giants are benching two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Eli Manning. Head coach Ben McAdoo announced today that Geno Smith will start at quarterback this Sunday against the Raiders in Oakland.
The move will end a streak of 210 consecutive regular-season starts for Manning, which ranks second in NFL history. McAdoo said the team will look at Smith over the last five games of the year and also give rookie Davis Webb an opportunity to play. The 36-year-old Manning has thrown for 2,411 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games this season for the 2-and-9 Giants.
