Bronx Fire Deadliest In Decades
(New York, NY) — The fast-moving apartment fire in the Bronx that has killed at least 12 people is one of the worst in New York City in decades. Less than a mile from the site of Thursday’s apartment fire, 87 people were killed in 1990, when an arsonist set fire to the Happy Land social club. Arson was also blamed in 1976, when 25 people died and dozens more were injured in a fire at the Puerto Rican Social Club. Ten years ago, in 2007, a space heater was blamed for a house fire in the Bronx that killed ten people, including nine children.

12 Dead, Death Toll Expected To Rise In Bronx Fire
(Bronx, NY) — Twelve people are dead, including four children, in the deadliest fire in a quarter century in New York City. The victims of last night’s Bronx fire include a one-year-old, a two-year-old, a seven-year-old and an unidentified boy. The fire broke out in a first floor apartment of a five-story building just a block from the Bronx Zoo. Fire Chief Dan Nigro says flames shot up like a chimney, despite heroic rescue efforts by the more than two-hundred firefighters who responded to the scene. Nigro is calling the fire historic in its magnitude and Mayor Bill de Blasio says with four people fighting for their lives, the death toll is expected to rise.
