A former Mattoon man pleaded guilty to federal charges of defrauding banks for more than $500,000. Officials say 75-year-old Alfred Cross, who now lives in Kinmundy, admitted to five counts of fraud at banks in Effingham, Mount Vernon, Benton, and Nashville, Illinois. Prosecutors say the scheme took place between April of 2011 to March of 2015. Each count carries a maximum sentence of 30-years in prison and a fine of up to $1,000,000. Sentencing is scheduled for May 9th in East St. Louis.
