Southern Illinois State Rep Calls SIU Split Plan Insulting
(Springfield, IL) — Illinois lawmakers will decide if it’s time to split Southern Illinois University’s two campuses, even though southern Illinois lawmakers don’t like the plan. State Rep Natalie Phelps Finne, who represents SIU’s main campus in Carbondale, last week called the legislation to give SIU Edwardsville its own trustees a ‘slap in the face.’ Phelps Finne said splitting the two campuses would hurt the Carbondale community. SIU officials say the Edwardsville campus is growing, while the Carbondale campus is shrinking, and the new estrangement reflects that reality.
