(Washington, DC) — Gina Haspel will be running the CIA. The Senate confirmed Haspel today on a vote of 54-45. She becomes the first woman to head the spy agency. Haspel has spent a 33-year career as a CIA operative and manager. Critics questioned Haspel’s role in some harsh interrogation practices after the 9-11 terror attacks. Virginia Democrat Mark Warner said he voted to confirm Haspel after getting assurances that she would “stand up to the President if ordered to do something illegal or immoral, like a return to torture.” Warner is vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Haspel replaces Mike Pompeo, who is now the secretary of state.
