Even after another school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas on Friday, Nicole Hockley believes there definitely has been some progress at the local and national level addressing gun violence. Hockley lost her son in the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting. On ABC’s “This Week,” Hockley said people are starting to recognize the signs of someone who’s at risk. According to Hockley, while access and safety surrounding guns is important, something needs to be done to stop people before they ever reach the point of picking up a firearm with the intent of hurting themselves or someone else.
Fred Guttenberg’s daughter died in the Parkland, Florida, school shooting. On the same program, Guttenberg called Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick’s comments about the need for stricter gun control “idiotic.” Guttenberg explained this isn’t just about guns, school safety and mental health. He said responsible gun ownership should be required by law that parents lock up their weapons so their kids can’t take them. Guttenberg claims that if the weapons are removed from a home and used in a school shooting, the parents should be held equally accountable.
