Study: Higher Breast Cancer Risk Can Last Decades After Childbirth
(Undated) — A new study says women who have children can have a higher risk of breast cancer for decades after they give birth. Researchers at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill say the increased risk can last up to 23 years. The lead author of the study says the risk is highest about five years after childbirth. It then gradually declines over time. The study found that after 23 years, the risk changes and childbirth appears to protect against breast cancer. The researchers say the risk is small and women shouldn’t worry. The study is reported in Monday’s edition of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
