Mattoon Post 88 exploded for 10 runs in the 8th inning and beat Shelby County 17-10 to advance to the 4th Division Tournament championship game. Shelby County plays tonight at 6:00 and if they win, it’ll be a rematch with Post 88 for the title.
The Mattoon 18 and under Pride edged Illinois Impact 3-2 to advance to the semifinals of the NSA World Series. Next is Kenosha, Wisconsin later today.

The non-conference schedule for the Fighting Illini men’s basketball team is set. The team will play at least five games that include teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Illinois’s first opponent in the newly renovated State Farm Center will be Notre Dame on December 2nd as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. The annual braggin’ rights game with Missouri is set for December 23rd.
Jamaica stunned the United States with a 2-1 win in the Gold Cup semifinals in Atlanta. Jamaica scored five minutes apart in the first half to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Team USA suffered its first loss in a Gold Cup semifinal match since 2003.
Division winners may not make the NBA Playoffs in the future. Commissioner Adam Silver says the league is leaning toward having the top eight records in each conference qualify for the postseason regardless of division standing.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred says baseball may need to rethink its July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. He points to the addition of a second Wild Card team in each league as keeping more teams in the race beyond the current deadline.
Yadier Molina’s bases-clearing double in the eighth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the White Sox in Chicago. Yadi’s hit helped St. Louis overcome a 2-0 deficit and sweep the two-game set. The Cardinals are back home tonight to open an 11-game homestand. First up is the Royals, who come to Busch Stadium for a makeup of June 14th rainout. The Cards will also host the Braves, Reds and Rockies on this homestand.
The Cubs and Reds split a doubleheader in Cincinnati. After suffering a 9-1 loss in the opener, the Cubs rallied from a 5-0 deficit for a 6-5 win in the nightcap. The Cubs will open a three-game series with the Phillies tomorrow afternoon at Wrigley Field. Jon Lester will get the start on the mound for the Cubs. The Phils will counter with Jerome Williams.
