I am very saddened to see that the state of Illinois’ financial situation is impacting my alma mater so greatly. With the report coming that as many as 200 pink slips are about to be sent out to workers and employees of Eastern Illinois University, things appear very bleak for the university I love, that is constantly ranked high in the U.S. News and World Report as one of the best universities in the nation. EIU not only gave me the skills and training I would need to make a career out of radio, but I never even would have considered radio as a vocation had I not attended EIU. They opened me up to a world of different possibilities that I had never even thought about making a part of my life and my career. And I know they have done that and continue to do that for countless other students. And, on top of all that, I also had some of the best times of my life while attending Eastern.
I hope that their funding push is successful, and even better, that the budget stalemate in Illinois gets resolved and the necessary funding for education and universities can resume. Funding education is an investment in the potential of every student who chooses to expand their horizons by attending an institution like EIU.
