I attended the Fund EIU Rally today and watched as EIU students, staff, and community members joined together (Feb. 5) to attempt to convince law makers to pass a budget. Hundreds of people were dressed in blue holding signs and chanting “EI-EI-EIU”. There was poster boards and markers provided to those wishing to create signs. State Senator of the 52nd District Scott Bennett was the first to speak. He discussed the budget crisis and how it is impacting every university in the state. Student Body President Shirmeen Ahmad explained how hard she and the other members of EIU Student Government have been working to get their message through to Springfield. A political science instructor discussed the budget crisis and student leaders discussed their experiences at EIU. The FUND EIU group plans to continue getting Springfield’s attention. They are making a video diary of students talking about their experiences at EIU and plan to send it to Springfield. Their Facebook page FUND EIU has over 2,300 likes and keeps growing.
