I-57, at milepost 172 was at a standstill for several hours yesterday in an accident involving 15 vehicles. Illinois State Police say a vehicle driven by Tremayne Posey of Antioch, Tennessee, was stopped on the roadway, and remaining vehicles traveling south crashed while attempting to avoid the vehicle. Posey and his passenger, Anita Mattix were taken to Carle. Two other drivers and passengers in separate vehicles were transported to St. Anthony’s.
Soon after the accident at milepost 172, troopers responded to a crash just a few miles away at milepost 168. Two vehicles were stopped due to previous accident. A Herrin woman, Norene Sleeman was unable to reduce speed in time and attempted to drive between the vehicles, and struck both. She was ticketed for no valid insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
