In the first game of an Apollo Conference doubleheader, the Mattoon baseball team handled Taylorville by a score of 12-2. The game ended in the fifth inning by way of the 10-run rule.
Taylorville scored twice in the first inning on three base hits with a Mattoon error mixed in. The Green Wave answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Rayme Hamilton drew a lead-off walk and stole second base. With two outs in the inning, Peyton Morrow launched a two-run homer to left-center field. Morrow’s second blast of the season tied the game 2-2 after an inning of play.
Mattoon took the lead in the second on Colton Shoot’s RBI single. The hit knocked in Alex Lilly who had drawn a one-out walk.
The Green Wave added on in the third inning. A two-out triple by Tucker Rappe set things up for Sawyer Scott’s RBI single. The lead was 4-2 after three.
The Mattoon bats broke loose in the fourth inning. Trey Skocy led off with a double. Hamilton singled as did Will Courtney. Garrette Branson drove in a pair of runs with a double off the center field fence. Morrow followed with an RBI triple, giving him a total of three runs batted in for the day. Rappe and Scott added run-scoring singles and the Green Wave had built a 9-2 lead after four innings.
Mattoon finished the game in the fifth by scoring three more times. Hamilton’s two-run triple scored Skocy and Shoot. Courtney’s single to left field brought in Hamilton with the game-ending run. The final was 12-2 in five innings.
Sawyer Scott collected his fourth victory on the mound this season for Mattoon. He went five innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, walked none, and fanned three.
The Green Wave scored 12 times on 15 hits with 5 runners left on base. Taylorville had 2 runs, 7 hits, and 5 stranded.
