UPDATED: Protests Starting To Heat up After Cop Not Guilty
(St. Louis, MO) — The prosecutor in St. Louis is speaking out after white former police officer Jason Stockley was found not guilty of murdering a black motorist. St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner said today’s ruling will not deter her for going after members of the police force who she believes have broken the law.
Gardner pushed back when asked whether her office should have pursued lesser charges instead of first-degree murder against Stockely in order to get a guilty verdict. She said she thought her team had a solid case. Stockley was charged in 2016 with murdering Anthony Smith. Stockley shot Smith in 2011, but the prosecution claimed Stockley planted a revolver on Smith after shooting him. Stockley had a bench trial and a judge ruled today that the state did not prove its case. Anticipating possible unrest, Missouri’s governor activated the National Guard yesterday and several area schools cancelled classes.
