New Study Warns Of Cost Of Ignoring Mississippi River Upkeep
(Madison, WI) — A new study says Congress and the Mississippi River states can’t afford to ignore the locks and dams along the upper Mississippi River. The University of Wisconsin study says the Army Corps of Engineers is behind on about a-billion-dollars of maintenance on both the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. But the study says not fixing the locks and dams could cost millions, particularly in road damage. Researchers say when the river is down, companies have to ship grain and other cargo by truck, and that damages Illinois’ roads even faster.
