Supreme Court To Hear Illinois Public Union Challenge
(Washington, DC) — The rules could soon be changing for public sector unions across the country. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in an Illinois case today, Janus versus AFSCME, that challenges Illinois’ rules that force state workers to join the union. The question is whether a worker can be forced to support a union that doesn’t support their political views or takes a stance that the worker disagrees with. AFSCME and other unions in Illinois, and across the country, say the case is part of a move to weaken the labor movement. Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s office says he’ll be in Washington D.C. today to watch the arguments.
