Ryan Forces Out House Chaplain
(Washington, DC) — House Speaker Paul Ryan is being called out by lawmakers for dismissing the House chaplain. NBC News says the Reverend Patrick Conroy wrote a letter to Ryan earlier this month saying, “As you requested, I hereby offer my resignation as the 60th Chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives.” Democrat Joe Crowley of New York said both Democrats and Republicans are personal friends of Father Pat and find it outrageous that he would be the first House chaplain in U.S. history to be dismissed. Republican Walter Jones of North Carolina said Conroy’s dismissal is a sad commentary on the House, and called it a freedom-of-speech issue. Some of Father Conroy’s prayers on the House floor have been blunt, like a prayer in November that called for the GOP tax bill to share its benefits with struggling Americans.
