(Svalbard Archipelago) — Norwegian authorities say a polar bear has been shot dead after attacking a guard leading tourists off a cruise ship. The attack happened when tourists from the MS Bremen landed on the northern most island of the Svalbard archipelago on Saturday. The bear apparently attacked a guard from the ship, injuring his head. A second guard then shot the bear in self defense. The guard who was attacked is not in life-threatening condition and was responsive when he was flown out for medical treatment. Tourism in the arctic has risen sharply over the past few years, prompting many critics to say people have no right to enter the polar bear’s habitat and then kill them for attacking.
