(Sapporo) — The death toll from Thursday’s earthquake in Japan has risen to 39. NHK News in Japan says Prime Minister Shinzo Abe [[SHEEN-zoh AH-bay]] visited the town of Atsuma today, located near the quake’s epicenter on the northern island of Hokkaido. Many of the fatalities from the magnitude-6.7 quake were caused by massive landslides in Atsuma, where rescue operations are still underway. Authorities in Hokkaido say at least 70 buildings were destroyed by the quake and about 58-hundred people are still in evacuation shelters.
