Turkey Seeking Arrest Warrant For Knicks Center Kanter
(New York, NY) — The Turkish government is reportedly seeking an arrest warrant for NBA center Enes Kanter after accusing him of being part of a terrorist group. Kanter, who had his Turkish citizenship revoked in 2017, has been an outspoken critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his policies for years. Multiple outlets are citing a report in Sabah newspaper, which claims the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office plans to request Kanter be extradited to face charges. Kanter, who denies any wrongdoing, publicly supported Fethulla Gulen, who was accused of a 2016 coup attempt.
Kanter refused to travel to London for an NBA game earlier this season, claiming he feared for his life and a possible assassination attempt. Turkey apparently revoked his passport in 2017. Kanter was drafted by the Utah Jazz, formerly played for the Oklahoma City Thunder as well, and is currently a member of the New York Knicks.
