Trump: Iran Appears To Be Backing Down After Missile Strikes
(Washington, DC) — President Trump says Iran appears to be standing down after launching more than a dozen missiles at two Iraqi military bases that host U.S. forces. Addressing the nation from the White House, Trump said an early warning system worked very well and he confirmed that no Americans were harmed. Trump did not threaten any retaliatory strikes against Iran, but he noted the reach and strength of the U.S. military. Iran’s attacks followed the recent U.S. airstrike that killed a top Iranian military leader in Iraq.
Trump again defended the U.S. action and said the hands of General Qassem Soleimani were “drenched in American and Iranian blood.” He also repeated a vow that Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. Trump said Iran must give up its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism. He argued that Iran could be a great and peaceful nation if it chooses to take that path. Trump threatened additional sanctions against Iran and called on NATO to get more involved in the Middle East peace process.
