Governor Creates Committee To Address Racial Disparities In Opioid Deaths
(Springfield, IL) — Governor J.B. Pritzker is creating a committee to address racial disparities in the number of opioid overdose deaths in Illinois. Pritzker signed the executive order yesterday, which will also dedicate over four million dollars to expand recovery and prevention services. The new Opioid Social Equity Committee will make policy recommendations about how to address social and racial disparities in the opioid crisis response. The overall number of opioid overdose deaths in the state has decreased for the first time in five years, while the number of deaths among black Illinoisans went up by over nine percent.
