According to Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office, a mental health evaluation has been ordered for the teen accused in the shooting at Mattoon High School. The evaluation will try to determine if the boy’s mental condition at the time of the shooting meant he wasn’t criminally responsible for what he did. He was not charged with attempted murder because that would require an attempt of killing a specific person. Coles County Public Defender Anthony Ortega has been appointed to represent the teen.
