Tsunami watches and warnings are out for the entire West Coast as well as Hawaii. They were triggered after a massive earthquake struck about 175 miles off Alaska overnight. Its preliminary magnitude was 8.0, then it was upgraded to 8.2 and is now being reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as 7.9. A tsunami watch is automatically generated by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center after a quake that registers above magnitude 7.5. A tsunami warning is issued once there’s evidence that an actual tsunami was created. Right now only Alaska and British Columbia are under warnings. Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii are in the watch category.
