
Lake Land College’s Community and Professional Programs will offer a variety of classes in the month of March. Whether you need to start at the beginning or just brush up on your skills, there is a class for you.
The course details and information are as follows:
- Hunter Safety Education – Learn basic firearm handling and safety. This IDNR-sponsored class meets the education requirement for obtaining a hunting license. A parent or guardian must register and be present with children 12 and under and register in the no license section. Please bring a sack lunch on Saturday. Learn basic firearm handling and safety. This class meets Thursday March 17 and Friday, March 18 from 6 -9 p.m.; Saturday, March 19 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Please bring a sack lunch on Saturday, March 19. You must attend all three sessions to obtain a hunting license. The instructor is Ronald Boeser and there is no cost.
- Memoirs – Your life story is unique and should be recorded for yourself and for your family. In this course, you will learn seven styles for writing memoirs. Since this is your “slice of life”, you choose the style that is right for you. Shirley will teach shortcuts to successful writing, inexpensive self-publishing, and a memorable means for handing out the copies to those you chose to receive them. Please bring a pack of index cards. Optional: Memoirs booklet available for $5. This class will meet on Tuesday, March 22 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Life Span Center. The instructor is Shirley Splittstoesser and the cost is $25.
- Wire-Wrapped Pendants – Basic wire wrapping for beginners! You’ll learn the art form of wire-wrapping and take home two wire-wrapped pendants of your creation. All materials including a selection of pendants provided but if you have a suitable stone you’d like to wire-wrap, bring it! (If you have a twirler tool and wire cutters, please bring them, but loaners will be available if you don’t have them.) This class will meet on Tuesday, March 22 from 1 – 3 p.m. at the Life Span Center. The instructor is Shirley Splittstoesser and the cost is $25.
- Caregiving Relationships – Caring for a dependent adult is much like riding a roller coaster. At times, you are at the top experiencing the rewards that come from caring for another person, other times, you may feel like you are plunging down a long hill. Caregiving Relationships workshop series is designed for caregivers of older adults, to help address the many issues and challenges that they face in their current role. Difficult emotions, communication, caregiver self-care, relationships and senior services are all topics that will be covered during the series. This class will be held Monday, March 29 to Monday, April 25 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The instructor is Cheri Burcham and the cost is $40.
- Understanding Digital Photography – Learn about your digital camera’s basic settings and modes as instructor Joe Ethridge explains the importance of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how to use these functions to improve your images. Take creative control of your photography by learning to utilize focus, exposure, lighting, composition, lenses and more to your advantage. This class will held on Tuesday, March 29 to Tuesday, May 3 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in Mattoon and Thursday, March 31 to Thursday, May 5 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in Effingham. The instructor is Joe Ethridge and the cost is $110.
- Budget and Credit 101 – How to set goals, make a budget, understand your credit report and credit score, how credit affects many aspects of our lives. Are you needing to get out of debt or save for a car or a house? Did you know a bad credit score can stop you from getting a job, car insurance, a car or a house? Understand why! Steps to help you increase your credit score. This class will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 6 – 9:30 p.m. and the cost is $25. The instructor is Sandy Deters, Certified Housing Counselor/Financial Coach, Embarras River Basin Agency.
- Realizing the American Dream – Are you ready to buy a home? Understand financing a home, shopping for a home and a maintaining home. Take this class along with Budget and Credit 101 to receive a $50.00 waiver for documentation fees from a local bank. You will also receive a Homeownership Education Certificate required by certain types of home mortgage loans. This class will be held on Thursday, March 31 from 6 – 9:30 p.m. and the cost is $25. The instructor is Sandy Deters, Certified Housing Counselor/Financial Coach, Embarras River Basin Agency.
