According to a press release from Mattoon Fire, at 2211 hours on March 23rd the Mattoon Fire Department received a report of a structure fire in an apartment building located at 1817 South 9th Street commonly known as Sunrise Apartments.
Upon arrival crews found fire and smoke coming from the Northwest corner of building D on the 3rd floor. Fire crews were able to make entry into building and make their way to the 3rd floor apartment. Crews were met with thick black smoke in the 3rd floor hallway prior to entering the fire apartment. Most of the fire was located in the Northwest bedroom; the fire had vented itself through a window. The fire caused heavy fire damage in this bedroom and throughout the apartment. Smoke and water damaged was also caused throughout the 3rd floor apartments and the apartment under the fire apartment.
The Fire crews did a fantastic job and made a great stop on this fire. It very well could have been a whole lot worse.
Two apartments ended up being uninhabitable. The Red Cross was called in to assist the tenants in finding a place to stay.
All units cleared the scene at 0015 hours.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Injuries – 1 person transported by ambulance to SBLHC
Responding agencies included Mattoon Fire, Charleston Fire RIT, Mitchell Jerdan, Mattoon Police and the Red Cross.
