For nearly 30 years, the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at Eastern Illinois University has hosted a conference in the fields of geometry, dynamical systems, and topology.
An extremely well-regarded annual event, this conference has attracted leading figures in each discipline to speak at Eastern, exposing students and faculty to cutting-edge research and offering new opportunities for collaboration.
The year 2016 will be a year of firsts for the conference.
According to co-organizer Andrew Parrish, this year will be the first in which the event receives funding from the National Science Foundation. Additionally, planners have adopted a new, more student-oriented approach.
“In addition to special lectures from both established and early-career mathematicians of international reputation, we will have several presentations and lectures from both undergraduate and graduate students — including EIU undergraduates participating in active research projects in the department,” Parrish said.
“This offers an amazing opportunity for mathematicians at every stage of their careers — from undergraduate to tenured professor — to come together and discuss their recent creative work in detail,” he added. “Participation in these discussions serves to help introduce and integrate students into the world of mathematics research as well as providing them with a more up-close-and-personal view of the professional life of research mathematicians.”
The conference will run from Friday through Sunday, April 15-17, and is free to attend (though registration is encouraged). More information is available at the conference website at https://ux1.eiu.edu/~gdt/2016.html.
