The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship Committee and the Mattoon Area Community Foundation are pleased to announce that the application is now available. Applicants must be a graduate of Mattoon Senior High School, exhibit high qualities of character, and must be a college junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing at the time of the award. Applications must be majoring in the fields of finance, banking, accounting, economics or computer sciences in order for consideration.
The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship application is only available online and the scholarship committee will no longer accept paper applications. The final deadline for applications and letters of reference is May 15, 2016 by 11:59 p.m. No incomplete or late applications will be considered after the deadline.
This scholarship honors the memory of the late Arland D. Williams, Jr. who grew up in Mattoon. Mr. Williams became a well-known example of extraordinary heroism when his actions saved five people after a 1982 airplane crash in Washington D.C. His selfless actions cost him his life.
The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in May 1983 by Mrs. Virginia Williams, mother of Arland D. Williams, Jr. Since 1985, 31 scholarships have been awarded totaling more than $67,000. The 2015 recipient of the Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship was Michael Heller, a 2011 graduate of Mattoon High School, pursuing a Master’s of Business Administration at Eastern Illinois University.
Mattoon Area Community Foundation, an affiliate of Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation, provides technical and administrative assistance for more than 20 funds for the benefit of Mattoon and Coles County, including the Arland D.
