Effingham won the first game of the high school baseball doubleheader over Mattoon by a score of 4-1. Each team scored a run in the first inning. Lane Koenig’s sacrifice fly plated the Hearts’ run. Garrette Branson’s run-scoring double chased home Rayme Hamilton for the Green Wave.
Effingham tallied three runs in the 2nd inning to regain the advantage. Michael Wohltman, who was 3-3 plus a walk, drove in a run as did Brent Beals, who was 4-4 with the bat. Another run scored on a throwing error.
The Hearts carried that 4-1 lead throughout the remainder of the game. Beals went the first 3.1 innings before giving way to Koenig on the hill. The right-handers combined to limit Mattoon to just three base hits in the game. Effingham totaled 11 hits as they improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Apollo Conference. The Green Wave slipped to 7-4 on the year, 0-1 in league play.
