The Mattoon Fire Department responded to a call just after 2:30 yesterday. According to Chief Nichols, crews found smoke coming from the residence at 1812 DeWitt. They were able to make their way to the kitchen to extinguish the fire. All occupants were evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival. The cause of the fire was determined to be “accidental due to cooking.”
