According to a press release from Mattoon Fire, at 0640 hours on April 25th the Mattoon Fire Department received a report of a structure fire in a residence located at 905 South 16th street.
Upon arrival crews found fire and heavy black smoke coming from the East side of the residence through a window that had self-vented. Fire crews were able to make entry into building and extinguish the fire. Crews made access through a door. The fire caused heavy damage in a foyer area and kitchen. Smoke and water damaged was also caused throughout the rest of the residence. The lone occupant escaped the structure without injury. No injuries to report at this time.
The cause of the fire is also undetermined at this time.
