Solitary confinement is a technique that may see less usage in Illinois prisons under a bill that was approved in committee last week. The bill, sponsored by State Representative La Shawn Ford of Chicago, would limit the confinement to no more than five straight days, and no more than five days over a five-month period. The bill language suggests leaving an inmate in for a longer period can cause psychological damage. The bill now moves to the full House.
