This year’s Lake Land College Summer College for Youth offerings include several new, unique topics as well as returning favorites.
The course details and information are as follows
- NEW: Bully Proof – this class teaches children to use verbal assertiveness and several non-violent self-defense techniques to stay safe if physically assaulted. As opposed to punching and kicking, we use leverage based control holds to neutralize threats and assertiveness training to build confidence to overcome bullies without violence. This class is for children ages 5 – 12 and meets Sunday, June 5 – Sunday, July 31 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. All classes will be held at the Arebalo Jiu-Jitsu, 811 N. 22nd St., Mattoon, Ill. The instructors are Adam Arebalo and Andrew Gaines and the cost is $90 which includes a uniform.
- Health Career Discovery Camp – Interested in a career in health care but unsure as to exactly which one? We’re here to help! Navigating which career might be the right fit for you can be overwhelming. With Lake Land College’s two day interactive camp, you will learn about various health career by attending fun interactive sessions. Health careers discussed included dental hygiene, paramedic services, fire science, massage therapy, nursing, phlebotomy, physical therapy, and many more! This class meets Tuesday, June 14 – Wednesday, June 15 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. The first day of class will be held at Lake Land College, 5001 Lake Land College Blvd., Mattoon Ill. in Neal Hall, room 103. The second day will be spent at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital. The cost is $25.
- Camp Invention – Join us to build a solar powered cricket, discover the science of slime and squid, think on your feet in high-energy games, take apart machines and make original prototypes and design an eco-adventure park and more! This camp is for children entering 1st – 6th grade and meets Monday, July 18 – Thursday, July 21 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. All classes will be held at Lake Land College, 5001 Lake Land College Blvd., Mattoon, Ill. The director is Leslie Partlow and the cost is $225. Register at campinvention.org.
