Governor Bruce Rauner has just three more weeks to consider a bill that would boost prison time for convicted gun traffickers. The bill is backed by police, prosecutors and even the gun lobby, but not by the American Civil Liberties Union, which says it wouldn’t do much to stop the flow of guns from surrounding states. If enacted, a first conviction for gun trafficking would mean a sentence of four to 20 years, while a second offense could mean 30 years. A Rauner spokesman says he’s still studying the bill.
