The state’s prison population continues to decline and is now down by 42-hundred since 2014. Numbers from the Illinois Department of Corrections put the prison population at 44-thousand-680 as of July 1st, compared with 48-thousand-921 in June of 2014. Governor Rauner has pledged to reduce the prison population by 25-percent over the next decade and has created a commission to develop strategies for achieving that goal.
