Mt. Zion hit the road on Friday night to take on a tough Highland team on the road.
The Braves stuck first but only held the lead for a few minutes. Highland got into the endzone before the end of the first quarter and led by the slimmest of margins, 7-6.
Mt. Zion hung tough with the Bulldogs, who will take on Effingham next week, by scoring again in the second and blanking Highland to take a 13-7 lead into the locker rooms.
Both teams found the endzone in the third quarter, Highland twice, and Mt. Zion just once but they also converted a two point PAT and the game was tied at 21 heading into the final quarter in Highland.
All Highland needed was to get into the endzone one time in the final quarter of the game and the Bulldogs took down Mt. Zion by just a touchdown, 28-21.
Mt. Zion falls to 1-1 after the loss and will play host to anther Mississippi Valley Conference opponent, Bethalto Civic Memorial.
