From WCIA, Champaign police have noticed a sharp uptick in the number of burglaries, both residential and vehicular. So far, 337 home burglaries have been reported and 403 car burglaries, up nearly 405 from last year. 73 arrests have been made at this point. The most common spot to be hit is the southwest side of the city.
Police are concerned about the dramatic increase and are attempting to increase awareness, stating that many of these could be easily avoided. Nearly all of the car burglaries have been from unlocked vehicles. Officers are trying to keep an eye out, but they are also saying that people need to take care to protect their homes and cars. They just want to see everyone be just a little more careful.
Police are also meeting with community to groups to get them involved and spread awareness. They are also asking anyone with information about burglaries in their area to call Champaign Police or Champaign County Crime Stoppers.
