Rauner May Veto Emanuel Pension Fixes
(Chicago, IL) — Governor Rauner is dropping hints that he may throw a monkey wrench into Mayor Emanuel’s plans to save two of the city’s pension funds. The Chicago “Sun-Times” reports Rauner may veto bills tied to Emanuel’s plans to fill holes in the municipal employees’ and laborers’ pension funds with new taxes on telephone bills and water bills. Rauner is quoted as saying his concern is that the plan stretches out the timetable to bring the plans to solvency, in effect kicking the can down the road. Rauner previously vetoed a similar plan to rescue the police and fire pension funds, but the Illinois House overrode that veto with help from three Republican lawmakers.
