(Springfield, IL) — Governor Rauner’s office says a controversial position has been abolished at the Illinois Department of Transportation. The governor sent out layoff notices earlier this month to a group of employees classified as “staff assistants.” Their last day on the state payroll was last Thursday. A 2014 report by the state’s top ethics investigator determined the special positions were created to hire people based on political considerations instead of qualifications. The probe also found that this type of hiring started under former Governor Rod Blagojevich and continued throughout ex-Governor Pat Quinn’s administration.
