State Does Poorly In Recovering Unemployment Overpayments
(Springfield, IL) — According to the U.S. Labor Department, Illinois ranks at the bottom when it comes to reclaiming unemployment benefits that were overpaid. The U.S. Labor Department is moving to assist the state after finding that Illinois has only recovered 37-percent of the 714-million-dollars in overpayments between 2012 and 2016. State officials say the poor recovery record is because until recently, the state relied on dated employment reports from companies and failed to enforce a federal rule that persons claiming benefits show steps they’ve taken to find work.
