Lakers Promote Magic; Fire Kupchak, Buss
(Los Angeles, CA) — The Los Angeles Lakers are promoting Earvin “Magic” Johnson to president of basketball operations. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss also announced that general manager Mitch Kupchak has been fired and vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss has been relieved of his duties. Buss will continue his role as part-owner. Johnson takes over after being named an advisor earlier this month. He won five NBA titles during his 13-year playing career with the Lakers, who drafted him first overall in 1979. The 57-year-old was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2002 and again in 2010 as a member of the “Dream Team.”
